Board-to-board connector precautions and common oversights

Before using a board-to-board connector, check whether it is poorly connected or fully locked, so that simple failures are prevented during use. Correct handling during assembly and operation has a direct effect on connector life.

Handling precautions

Do not insert the connector in reverse or misaligned. If a connector does not plug in smoothly, do not force it, because forcing can damage the internal pins.

The spacing of the connector's positive and negative leads must match the position of the solder holes on the PCB. If a mismatched hole distance forces the plug into the board, the leads are stressed and the connector can short-circuit or draw a rising leakage current.

A board-to-board connector has many pins, and the internal pin wiring wears a little with every mating. Avoid mating and unmating too frequently, which shortens service life. Before mating, check that no pin is deformed, so that forcible insertion does not break or bend a pin.

When tightening the screws at both ends of the connector, tighten both sides firmly and evenly. If one side is left loose, the connector tilts and can be damaged.

Operating points that are easy to overlook

Allow the connector to cool. After equipment has run for a while, stop for a few minutes so that the connector elements can dissipate heat. Under continuous load, the metal terminals inside the connector age faster, and because the connector is small, an operating temperature above its rating can damage the elements.

Keep the connector out of very humid environments. The internal terminals are mostly plated parts, and humidity degrades the insulation. When selecting a connector, check whether the humidity of the working environment will affect its function.

Clean the connector periodically. The plastic housing is made by injection molding, in which molten plastic is injected into the mold and rapidly cooled. Over time, grease and other liquids accumulate inside the connector, and oil from circuit components can drip into it. Cleaning removes adsorbed moisture and debris and prevents contamination of the circuit.

Keep the contact jacks clean. A board-to-board connector interface contains many end pins, and dust and debris accumulate and adsorb during long operation. Left untreated, this affects connector function and can create a safety hazard.

Store the connector sealed. Because the internal metal pins are mostly plated parts, the connector should be kept in sealed packaging and not exposed to air, or moisture will cause oxidation inside the components. Avoid long-term storage, which encourages oxidation and affects product quality; use the connector within its shelf life.

Ensure the connection is firm. A loose connector can disconnect during use and cause leakage that later disrupts the operation of the entire circuit system, so plug stability is essential.
