How torsion springs are made on CNC spring machines

The spring finger evolved from a part that relied on the elastic deformation of a crossbow arm into the torsion spring, which uses the lever principle to generate its output force. Torsion springs are relatively high-precision components, and production beyond about 1800 degrees of coiling exceeds what a general-purpose spring machine can deliver.

For this reason, Dongguan spring factories typically produce torsion springs on a universal spring-forming machine. This fully automatic CNC machine completes the forming and positioning of parts in different shapes and at different angles with relatively high precision.

What the universal spring machine does

A spring is an elastic element widely used in electronic equipment. When loaded, it undergoes large elastic deformation, converting mechanical work or kinetic energy into deformation energy; when the load is removed, the deformation disappears, the part returns to its original shape, and the stored energy is converted back into mechanical work or kinetic energy. In this role springs carry out four main functions.

First, they control the movement of machinery, for example the valve springs of an internal combustion engine or the control springs of a clutch. Second, they absorb vibration and impact energy, for example the buffer springs under cars and railway carriages, or the vibration-absorbing springs in couplings. Third, they store and release energy as power, for example the mainsprings of wall clocks and the springs of firearms. Fourth, they act as force-measuring elements, for example in force testers and spring scales; the ratio of load to deformation is called the spring rate, and the greater the stiffness, the harder the spring.

Torsion bars

Modern torsion bars are mostly made of steel with excellent elasticity, and their forms have broadened greatly, including the hairsprings of mechanical watches, the power springs of toy gyro guns and the torsion rods used in tanks and cars. The torsion bar is compact yet produces a large torque, which makes it an effective shock absorber for vehicles and other transport equipment.
