Common problems with industrial plugs and their fixes

Household plugs are familiar to everyone, but industrial plugs are less well understood. As the name suggests, an industrial plug is a connector built for industrial duty, and its use has spread steadily in recent years. In practice, most of the problems seen in service come down to installation and operating errors that are easy to prevent.

Common causes of installation and use problems

Three causes account for most faults. First, industrial-grade plugs have been introduced into production and promoted widely only over the past decade or so, and many installers lack the relevant specialist knowledge and the basic principles of installation, which leads to wiring and use errors. Second, a plug is often treated as a very simple item, so it is installed carelessly instead of following the required steps. Third, incorrect operation occurs when application regulations are not followed, and non-compliant operation produces faults.

Why these problems are dangerous

A wrongly installed plug may not fail immediately, and users who have not yet seen an accident tend to assume there is no problem and ignore the fault. But when an accident does occur it can endanger machinery, equipment and operators. Installation and use should therefore never be treated as optional precautions.

Correct use and installation

Anyone using an industrial plug for the first time should read the application manual and receive training on the installation method and application regulations before starting work. Installation must follow the specification. It is wrong to simply run a cable to a power outlet or connector to obtain a switching supply quickly without checking the rating and the wiring.

Selecting the right ingress protection rating

Ingress protection ratings should be selected by rule rather than convenience. A higher-rated device can be used in place of a lower-rated one: IP67-rated equipment may be substituted wherever IP44 accessories are suitable. The reverse is not allowed: IP44 accessories cannot replace IP67 where the higher rating is required. For example, a socket on a construction site exposed to extreme conditions, water and mud must use the rated waterproof housing and cable coupler; omitting them is an installation error.
