Where are speciality springs used?

A speciality spring is a mechanical part that works by elastic rebound, usually made from spring steel. It is used to control the movement of parts, reduce shock or vibration, store energy and measure tension. Examples include valve springs in internal combustion engines, control springs in clutches, cushioning springs in cars and rail vehicles, and shock-absorber springs in automobiles, as well as springs used in blinds, clock springs, firearms, dynamometer springs and spring scales. Speciality springs are elastic elements widely used across the electromechanical industry.

How a speciality spring works

Under load the spring undergoes large elastic deformation, converting mechanical or kinetic energy into deflection energy. When the load is removed, it returns to its original shape and converts that deflection energy back into mechanical energy. Speciality springs are compact, carry large loads, assemble conveniently and distribute the load uniformly.

Stacking arrangements

Different load-deflection curves are obtained by different stacking arrangements: stacking inserts to increase deflection, stacking to increase load, or a combination of parallel and series stacking. In the machinery industry speciality springs replace cylindrical coil springs with a wider range and function, and their smaller deflection supports compact designs and functional diversification.

Energy storage and damping

Load testing shows the product carries a large load within a compact axial envelope compared with other spring types, storing more deflection energy per unit volume and providing better shock and vibration absorption. The parallel stacking arrangement is particularly effective for shock absorption and energy dissipation because of the friction damping between the surfaces.

Where they are used

Speciality springs are widely used in national defense, metallurgy, engineering, electric power, machine tools and construction. Typical applications include molds, valves, clutches, brakes, support gantries, bridge shock-absorption devices, bearing preloads, overload devices, heavy machinery, mechanical actuators, control devices, industrial furnaces, indexing mechanisms and clamping devices.
